-->Ultrasound Technician vs. Radiologist – What is the difference?
When people are looking to get into the medical field some consider the ultrasound technician to start. However, there are also those that consider Radiology as an alternative career path. There seems to be some confusion with these two careers.
The radiologist is one that interprets medical images. Whereas a sonographer uses sound waves to see the inside of the body and make judgments based upon those images. Radiology involves a whole different set of technology in order to peek within the human body however the images that the sonographer and radiologist may produce will seem similar.
If you have ever had an “X-Ray” then you were served by a radiologist. However, if you or your wife became pregnant then you most likely were served by a sonographer. The application of each tool is dependent upon what you really want to do with the images. For instance you could not see a baby inside a woman’s womb by using an X-Ray as that would be too harsh and harm the baby as well. But using sound waves you can see inside the womb without harming the baby.
M.R.I. images may be interpreted by a radiologist but these are too static in order to see the blood flow in the veins. For this case you would need the special skill of an ultrasound technician in order to see the blood flow and determine if there are any life threatening blood clots or damage to the veins.
The base skill set for each profession is going to be the same however. You will still need to understand physics, biology, and chemistry as well as a good understanding of the human anatomy. These skills are universal when it comes to becoming a ultrasound technician.
Typically you will see the ultrasound technician when there is a need to determine the health of a baby or when you need to interpret the health of some sensitive organ such as the heart or lungs. Many ultrasound technicians do not make any diagnoses what so ever but rather hand off their images to the Doctors in order to determine an appropriate plan of action.
For the radiologist however this can be quite the opposite. Many Doctors will rely on a trained and experienced radiologist in order to determine a course of action. These are very critical in the whole decision making process for the treatment and care of any patient.
Interestingly enough an ultrasound technician will be paid more than a radiologist. I am actually a bit unclear as to why this is the case. Perhaps this involves newer technology and hence more up to date skills that would require a higher pay scale.
Ultrasound technicians are also responsible for their equipment and the updating of patients charts so clearly a wide range of skills is going to be needed in order to perform this job right.
Whichever path you choose to take remember that you do need to be skilled in basic human anatomy as well as the hard sciences such as physics, biology, and chemistry. Many people drop out of this program major because they cannot handle the workload involved. Just be prepared to really work at this and you will be successful.

-->Ultrasound Technician – Finding the right school
As a person interested in becoming an ultrasound technician it is important that you find the right school that is going to fit your budget and time constraints. Perhaps you are lucky and are just graduating high school and have all the time in the world. This really helps to open up the options to select the right school for you. However, many people are not so lucky. There are a lot of single moms that may want to get into this field for whatever reason. Perhaps you are one of them?
Whatever your reason for going into this school you must first select a CAAHEP accredited college. This may be as simple as going down to your local community college. There are plenty of these accredited colleges around so I am sure you will be able to find one in your area.
You see while some schools claim to teach this school online this is a field where hands on experience must be gained in order to be considered worthy of employment. Any school that claims to teach by using an online classroom is just giving you a bunch of lies. There are no hospitals or Doctors offices that would accept these graduates.
You should always ask for any information on the success rates of the students who got jobs from this school. While a college may have an excellent academic record they may not have as equally good of a record in helping their students find successful employment. This is just a fact of life and if you really want to work once you graduated you need to find this information out first.
Clearly some schools are geared towards the working adult and others are not. Again this is just a fact of life. As well you may find yourself in a field that is populated with many females. This may seem awkward if you are the only male in the classroom. Clearly this may be an overstatement but I have seen many degree programs geared towards helping the working mother and not necessarily the working father. That is something to consider before proceeding.
If you can find the balance between work and school and family you will be able to really succeed in your degree and also in this field. This is why you should really look for a school that allows for that balance. Those students that cannot find this balance are the most likely to drop out and never return to finish their degrees.
Finding the right school for this may take some time. There may be some serious research involved. Personally I would ask the people who may be your future employers who they would hire from and the reasons why. That is perhaps the best way to ensure you actually have a job when you graduate.
As well if you can find a good school that is geared towards always helping you gain the skills needed in order to do the job right the first time then you are almost assured to get the position you applied for.

-->The Importance of Accreditation when selecting an Ultrasound school
When you are looking into becoming an ultrasound technician the price of the school and its accreditation should seriously be considered. There are many schools out there in the market that will try and convince you that they are just as good as any accredited school. Unfortunately, I have to strongly disagree with this statement.
Clearly with the rise in the need for trained medical professionals the rise in the number of schools offering these degrees has meant that there are some really shady characters. Many of these schools are private and for profit institutions that do serve a purpose but also do a disservice to their students.
Without the proper accreditation your degree may just become worthless and no one will be willing to hire you. The Internet is replete with stories of those that spent close to 50K dollars only to find out that their money spent was just worthless debt. Now, you will learn some valuable skills from these schools and they may seem rigorous but you have to cater what your future employer wants.
The best way to ensure that you pick the right schools is to find a directory of accredited schools that teach ultrasonography. There are many directories of these schools on the web so that should be easy to find. The most popular and most asked for accreditation is the CAAHEP accreditation. If you already know what hospital you want to work for then perhaps asking the Human Resource department what they require would really help.
Clearly you must plan ahead with this and by choosing the right school right off the bat is the best way to make the path to a job easy and worry free. If you can join a group of like minded people who are also going for the same degree then I would recommend that as well. Do not ever underestimate the power of networking, it will pay off many times over.
So then why do these non accredited schools get away with issuing degrees? Shouldn’t there be some sort of regulation? Well honestly the only way to regulate this is with self regulation and that is what is going on right now. Many of these schools get away with this type of practice because not every medical office cares if you are really fully accredited or not. If you can do the job they figure you are good enough. However, since these types of offices may not be in your area it is best to not take that chance.
Having an accredited degree also means you will be able to easily expand on your skills as you can transfer those credits to other Universities so that you can go further in your career. The simple fact of the matter is that non accredited schools produce credits that will not transfer to the accredited schools and this means far less options for you in the future.
If you really want to be successful in your career then you will want to keep learning and growing. This will show to your future employer the reason why you should get any future advancements.
